When you're planning a photo session, one of the first questions you might ask is:

“Should we do posed or lifestyle photos?”

The answer? Both!

As a family and portrait photographer based in Youngstown, Ohio, I believe there's value in each style—and when blended together, you get a session that feels authentic, natural, and beautifully you.

Let’s talk about the difference between posed and lifestyle photography—and why I love offering a little bit of both in every session.

What Is Posed Photography?

Posed photography is exactly what it sounds like—everyone is arranged a certain way, looking at the camera, with polished posture and intentional placement.

Think:

  • The classic “everyone smiling” family photo
  • Senior portraits with specific backdrops or props
  • Wedding party group shots

These are the timeless images grandma wants on her mantel (and let's be honest, you probably do too). Posed images create a sense of formality, symmetry, and structure.

 What Is Lifestyle Photography?

Lifestyle photography is more relaxed, candid, and focused on storytelling. It captures real interactions, subtle emotions, and the everyday beauty of your life as it’s happening.

Think:

  • Your child laughing while picking wildflowers
  • You and your partner wrapped in a blanket on a chilly fall day
  • A quiet in-home moment of snuggles, snacks, or bedtime books

Lifestyle sessions feel less like a photoshoot and more like you're just spending time together—and I’m there to document it.

Why I Choose Both

While I’m drawn to natural, real moments (and live for the candid giggles and imperfect beauty), I also believe there’s room for both styles in your gallery.

Here’s why:

  • Posed photos give you the frame-worthy, traditional shots that are often requested by family and loved ones.
  • Lifestyle images preserve what it felt like to be in that season of life—not just what it looked like.
  • Together, they create a full story: the connection, the calm, the chaos, and the joy.

I might start a session with some gently posed photos to help you warm up to the camera, then shift into movement and interaction to capture more natural moments. I’ll give guidance when needed, but always leave space for real connection to shine through.

“But We’re Awkward in Front of the Camera!”

Everyone says this—seriously, everyone. But that’s where lifestyle photography is a game-changer. I use easy prompts and fun interactions to help you loosen up so the posed shots feel less stiff and the lifestyle ones feel 100% natural.

Trust me—you don’t need to be a model. You just need to show up and be you.

Photography in Northeast Ohio: The Perfect Backdrop for Both

Whether we're wandering through Mill Creek Park, hanging out at home, or catching golden hour in a quiet field, Ohio gives us the perfect mix of beauty and simplicity.

I love helping families in Youngstown and surrounding areas create galleries that are just the right mix of real and refined. Because life isn’t just posed or candid—it’s both.
